With the introduction of direct flights to and from Auckland, Invercargill Airport was classified as a security-designated airport - meaning travellers heading to/from Auckland needed their luggage checked via the baggage screening area.
The terminal expansion provided room to do just that: there is now a waiting lounge, an additional security lane with x-ray machines and an additional baggage screening area at check-in.
